Welcome to Writing Under the Blankets! I’m so excited to share with you what I’ve learned about joining the writing community. When I was a kid, I used to write stories at night with the blankets pulled over my head to fool my parents into thinking I was asleep (though, let’s be honest, I wasn’t fooling anyone). As I got older, I metaphorically continued “writing under the blankets” by hiding the fact that I was a writer from all but my closest friends and family. For some reason, I guess I thought that writing fiction wasn’t a legitimate interest unless I’d published something and could say that I was a fabulously successful author.
Which is, of course, ridiculous.
But I didn’t really change my ways until about a year ago, give or take a few months, when I decided to start opening up about my adoration of creative writing and branding myself as a writer. Today, I consider that decision to be one of the best I’ve ever made, and this blog is about how making the same decision will help to make you a better writer and a happier person.
My name is Jordan Radford McDowell. I am currently working on a post-apocalyptic, science fiction novel that I plan to publish by the end of this year. (More about that in later posts.) I studied Linguistics and Editing at Brigham Young University, and then went to law school there too. I don’t consider myself to be an expert, but everything I post on this blog is cited to people who are. All of the advice I write about is backed up by authors who really know what they’re talking about, so I hope you’ll explore, and have as much fun learning about the writing process as I do!
